Some Boca Raton intersections see more crashes than others. Know where they are.

Boca Raton roads stay busy from morning to night. Daily commuters, retirees, college students, tourists, and seasonal residents all use the same roads, which keeps traffic heavy throughout the city. Add crowded turn lanes, shopping center entrances, and stop-and-go congestion, and intersections quickly become some of the riskiest places to drive.

Here are the 5 most dangerous intersections in Boca Raton.

Glades and Federal Highway (US-1)

This is one of the busiest spots in the city, and anyone who drives it regularly knows the deal. Traffic on Federal moves fast while Glades tends to back up, and the plazas on every corner mean someone is always turning into or out of a parking lot.

Most crashes at this intersection come from sudden stops. A driver hits the brakes for a car cutting into a plaza, and the driver behind them is too close or too distracted to react in time.

Drivers also cause a lot of side-impact crashes by pushing through a yellow on Federal and clipping a car already turning across.

The crosswalks see a lot of foot traffic, especially on weekends. Drivers turning right on red are usually looking left for oncoming traffic and miss someone stepping into the crosswalk on their right.

Palmetto Park and Military Trail

The left turns at this intersection are brutal. Drivers heading toward downtown or toward Town Center spend a lot of time waiting, and once the arrow comes up, everyone tries to squeeze through before it turns yellow.

Left-turn collisions cause most of the serious wrecks at this intersection. A driver turning across Palmetto misjudges the speed of an oncoming car, or assumes the car is going to slow down, and the two vehicles meet in the middle. These are the kind of crashes that send people to the ER, because the impact hits the side of the turning car where there is barely any protection.

Yamato and Congress Ave

This is the morning and evening commute intersection. The corporate buildings off Congress and Yamato dump everyone toward the 95 ramp at the same time, and drivers are usually in a hurry or half-checked-out. Plus, the construction in this area off and on over the years has not helped.

Most of the crashes at this intersection come from late lane changes. Drivers realize they need to get over to make the ramp and cut across two or three lanes without checking, which leads to sideswipes and angle hits. Rear-end crashes happen often too, especially in the stop-and-go right before the ramp.

Glades and St. Andrews Blvd

Most of the trouble at this intersection comes from shopping traffic. The plazas along Glades pull constant in-and-out movement, and drivers brake hard when the car ahead of them swings into a parking lot without much warning.

Rear-end crashes drive most of the injury claims at this intersection. A driver watching for their turn misses the brake lights ahead of them and runs into the back of a stopped car. Weekends are the worst, when shopping traffic peaks.

Palmetto Park and Powerline

This intersection trips up out-of-town drivers and snowbirds who are not used to the lane setup. There are multiple turn lanes and it is easy to end up in the wrong one and try to cut over at the last second.

Those last-second lane changes lead to a lot of side-impact crashes. Rear-end collisions also come up regularly, usually when one driver slams on the brakes to avoid missing a turn and the driver behind has nowhere to go.

The protected-turn phase is another problem. Drivers sometimes think they have a green arrow when the light is just a regular green, turn into oncoming traffic, and cause a T-bone crash.

Why Are Intersections Dangerous in Boca Raton?

Boca Raton’s roads were built for a much smaller city. Major east-west roads like Glades, Palmetto, and Yamato now carry commuter traffic, shopping traffic, beach traffic, and drivers cutting through from nearby cities, all feeding into the same dangerous intersections.

The mix of drivers adds another layer of risk. At any given Boca Raton intersection, you might have a daily commuter, a seasonal resident, a tourist following GPS, a parent on school pickup, and an FAU student all reacting differently to the same traffic light. Snowbird season adds even more volume, turning short waits into multiple light cycles and increasing the chances of rushed decisions.

Shopping center entrances make things even harder. Many of Boca Raton’s most dangerous intersections sit right beside plazas, so turning traffic is not limited to the light itself. Drivers brake suddenly for a plaza entrance, pull into traffic from a parking lot, or cut across lanes to make a last-minute turn.

How Comparative Fault Affects Boca Raton Intersection Crash Cases

Intersection crashes often leave both drivers blaming each other. The driver going straight says they had the green light. The driver turning says the other car was speeding. The driver changing lanes says the other car would not let them merge.

Florida’s comparative fault law gives insurance companies room to argue you were partly at fault, and every percentage of blame they assign to you reduces what they have to pay.

For example, if your damages total $100,000 and you are found 20% at fault, your recovery drops to $80,000. If you are more than 50% at fault, you may recover nothing.

That is why adjusters ask detailed questions after intersection crashes. Were you on your phone? Were you speeding? Did you see the other driver before impact? Even a simple answer can be used later to reduce your claim.

“Attorneys Greg Francis and Ryan Fletcher at Osborne & Francis Law Firm represented me in my personal injury case. The defendant drew a line in the sand and was adamant on a settlement amount I was almost willing to accept. After the dust settled and the smoke cleared, we settled for 3 times that amount!!! When they say ‘Real Tough Lawyers,’ they mean it.”
