Woman struck, killed by van after getting out of vehicle on I-95

EDGEWATER, FL – Authorities said a woman died after being struck by a vehicle on Interstate 95 in Volusia County on Saturday morning.

According to WKMG, the incident happened on I-95 south near State Road 442 near Edgewater at about 6:10 a.m.   The woman was a passenger in a vehicle that stopped on the right shoulder as she attempted to take over the wheel due to the fatigue of the driver.

The Florida Highway Patrol said that when the driver got out of the vehicle, two dogs inside got out and ran into the roadway.  When the woman got out to go after the dogs she was hit by a van, troopers said.

The woman, a 40-year-old Mims resident, was pronounced dead at the scene.  The van driver, a 33-year-old man from Orange City, was not injured.  The dogs were not hurt.

The southbound lanes of I-95 were shut down for the crash investigation for about four hours.

The accident remains under investigation by the FHP.
