Driver facing DUI charge in crash that killed pedestrian in Lake County

LAKE COUNTY, FL – Authorities say they have made an arrest in a crash that caused the death of a pedestrian in Lake County.

According to WKMG, 38-year-old Heather Popes was taken into custody in connection with the July 25, 2019 incident on County Road 33.

The Florida Highway Patrol said Popes was driving southbound at about 7:25 p.m. when she traveled onto the west shoulder of the roadway and struck 35-year-old Pauline Martin, who was walking along the west shoulder.

Popes’ vehicle then hit a cable box, guy-wire and two mailboxes.  Martin was pronounced dead at the scene.

Popes was arrested Monday on charges of vehicular homicide and DUI manslaughter.  The FHP said a toxicology report showed that Popes had tested positive on an alcohol and drug test.
