77-year-old driver dies after crashing into tree in front of Leesburg store

LEESBURG, FL – A driver was killed when his car crashed near a store in Leesburg on Tuesday afternoon, the Leesburg News reports.

Police said a 77-year-old man driving a Honda Civic was going east on State Road 44 sometime before 1:49 p.m. when the vehicle went off the roadway.  The car entered the property of a Walgreens store at 901 S. 14th Street and collided with a tree.

The driver, a Leesburg resident, was pronounced dead after being flown to an area trauma center. His name was not released.  It did not appear that any other vehicles were involved in the crash, investigators said.

Leesburg police are continuing to investigate the incident.
